<p><strong>Am I a hypochondriac if&#8230;</p>
<p>I get out of bed and head toward the computer at 3 o&#8217;clock in the morning to search for the reasons I have a symptom? What if I sit there and read about all the things the symptom may be?</strong></p>
<p>Probably not. We are used to having the opportunity to find answers to our questions nearly instantly and medical information is no different. Why lay in bed and worry until the doctor&#8217;s office opens at 9 AM when we can possibly diagnose ourselves well enough that we can get back to sleep? When our parents raised their children they got out the Dr. Spock medical books to try to figure out what the source of their symptoms may be. We just have the Internet.</p>
<p>If, however, you find that you are tempted to run to the computer and spend hours there on a regular basis scouring the forums and medical web sites trying to find out why you feel the way you do, it may be time to turn off the computer. Don&#8217;t let your research take over your life.</p>
<p><strong>Am I a hypochondriac if&#8230;</p>
<p>Every time someone tells me about their symptoms of a certain disease, I begin to believe I must have that too.</strong></p>
<p>Consider this: do you really believe you <em>have</em> that illness, in addition to your other ones, or are you just casually laughing about having more of the same symptoms?</p>
<p>When we live with chronic illnesses there are hundreds of symptoms we experience that sound familiar others and vice versa. Just because it &#8220;sounds&#8221; like you have another illness, doesn&#8217;t mean you do. And just because you may joke about it doesn&#8217;t mean you actually think you have five more illnesses.</p>
<p>On the other hand, many secondary illnesses exist for those with chronic diseases, especially those with autoimmune diseases. For example, fibromyalgia, sjorgren&#8217;s syndrome, or Chrohn&#8217;s Disease can all be a challenge for those who have illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis. If you tend to start becoming a bit obsessed about having one more disease, check with your specialist and rule it out if you can.</p>
<p><strong>Am I a hypochondriac if&#8230;</p>
<p>Any small change in my disease makes me feel like I must now have cancer. Deep down I believe it is just a matter of time before I have cancer. </strong></p>
<p>While it is true that hundreds of thousands of people do get cancer, a great majority of them survive it. Whether you have a family history of it or not, go see your doctor or specialist and talk about your risk factors. Some medications for autoimmune diseases can cause, or increase the risk of, cancer and this can play some major games with your psyche about it.</p>
<p>Discuss the risks and what you can do to stay on top of it. Are there certain tests that you should be having done? How can you do your best to be in control of it and catch it early if you do have it?</p>
<p>After that, though I know it&#8217;s hard, focus on turning those worries over to God. Each day is precious and worrying about things that do not yet exist truly are a waste of our time and the energy we do have.</p>
<p><strong>Am I a hypochondriac if&#8230;</p>
<p>I tend to see one doctor after another, constantly asking them to run more tests, because their medical opinion must be wrong&#8211;I know someone is missing something. I am sick!</strong></p>
<p>Although those with hypochondria do make their way through many doctors, looking for proof of the invisible illness, just because you are insisting on quality medical care in coping with your chronic disease does not mean you are a hypochondria.</p>
<p><strong>Becoming your own best health advocate</strong></p>
<p>Though other people may suspect hypochondria, we each must learn to be a health advocate for our self, and this means coming to an understanding that finding that perfect doctor will likely never come to fruition. You will need to think about what the most important factors are in the doctor/patient relationship and then figure out how to be content when you don&#8217;t discover your soul-mate-physician. What you want is a doctor who will treat your illness to the best of his or her ability, in the way that you prefer.</p>
<p>The condition of hypochondria is considered a serious and legitimate disease and the Mayo Clinic provides a clear hypochondriac definition of the symptoms one may experience if she suffers with this condition that is considered psychological. These include:</p>
<p>* Having a long-term intense fear or anxiety about having a serious disease or health condition</p>
<p>* Worrying that minor symptoms or bodily sensations mean you have a serious illness</p>
<p>* Seeing doctors repeated times or having involved medical exams such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), echocardiograms, or exploratory surgery</p>
<p>* Frequently switching doctors &#8211; if one doctor tells you that you aren&#8217;t sick, you may not believe it and seek out other opinions</p>
<p>* Continuously talking about your symptoms or suspected diseases with family and friends</p>
<p>* Obsessively doing health research</p>
<p>* Frequently checking your body for problems, such as lumps or sores</p>
<p>* Frequently checking your vital signs, such as pulse or blood pressure</p>
<p>* Thinking you have a disease after reading or hearing about it</p>
<p>According to an article at WebMD, &#8220;Internet Makes Hypochondria Worse: Cyberchondria&#8221; . .</p>
<p><em>The medical condition called hypochondriasis is defined as worry over an imagined illness with exaggeration of symptoms, no matter how insignificant, that lasts for at least six months and causes significant distress. It tends to develop in the 20s or 30s, and it affects men and women equally. It sometimes comes on following the illness of a friend or family member, and it can also occur as a secondary illness to depression or generalized anxiety disorder.</em></p>
<p>When we live with chronic illnesses and daily chronic pain, we are very in tune with our body and it can be hard to even remember what is was like to live unaware of every ache and pain, movement, and moods. When we are talking with a friend and share what latest ache we have just experienced it can be easy for to share her exasperation. &#8220;Wow, that is all you ever seem to talk about. I hurt here, I hurt there. Don&#8217;t you have anything else you ever think of but your pains? I swear, some days I think you are a hypochondriac!&#8221;</p>
<p>Comments like this can be devastating to those of us with chronic conditions and invisible illnesses. It is not that we really think we have <em>all</em> the illnesses! We just seem to have more than we&#8217;d prefer!</p>
<p>If you have concerns that you may be suffering from being more than just a good health advocate and are bordering on hypochondria, don&#8217;t be afraid to talk to a counselor about it. You should not have to live in fear that thoughts about your illness&#8211;or the illnesses that you are worried you may get&#8211;are taking over your life so much so that you can no longer enjoy it. There are multiple ways to reduce the anxiety in your life from becoming more involved in your local church to broadening your circle of friendships. You may wish to see see a counselor, or even consider medications to decrease the anxiety in your life.</p>
<p>2 Timothy 1:7 says, &#8220;For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.&#8221; (KJV). Power, love, a sound mind&#8211;and no fear. That is how we were meant to live, so if you can&#8217;t do it on your own, don&#8217;t be afraid to ask for help.</p>
